How to Get Your Driver’s License
The process can feel overwhelming — especially for home-schooled students. Don’t worry. We’ll walk you through every step and provide everything you need along the way.
Enroll in the EZ Drive Virginia Homeschool Driver’s Education course and begin working through the material at your own pace. The course is broken into 12 structured modules covering everything from Virginia traffic laws to defensive driving, alcohol awareness, highway safety, and more.
As you work through the course, you will be fully prepared for the two-part knowledge exam you’ll take at the DMV to obtain your learner permit.
Once you feel prepared — we recommend completing at least Module 1, or ideally the full course — visit your local Virginia DMV Customer Service Center with the following:
- Completed Form DL-1P (Learner Permit & Driver’s License Application)
- Proof of identity and legal Virginia residence
- Your social security card or number
At the DMV you will pass a vision screening and a two-part knowledge exam. You will also pay the application fee for both your learner permit and your future driver’s license at this visit.
If your parent will be administering the behind-the-wheel driving training, bring the completed HS-1 form (Virginia Home-Schooled In-Car Driver Education Parental Authorization) as well.
Finish all 12 modules and pass the 50-question final exam with a score of 80% or better. The exam can be retaken as many times as needed, with feedback provided after each attempt.
Upon passing, your certificate of completion will be emailed to you immediately. Keep this certificate — you will need it for the next steps.
Alongside the online course, your student must complete all required in-car driving and observation hours. Virginia requires:
- The In-Car Maneuvers Observation Record (CSMA 19)
- 7 fifty-minute periods of driving (covering at least 50 miles total)
- 7 fifty-minute periods of observation — your student may observe you driving using the lesson plans in the training module
- No more than 2 instruction periods in any 24-hour window (1 driving + 1 observation)
- At least 45 additional hours of supervised driving, including a minimum of 15 hours after sunset
Driving hours can be completed with a parent or guardian if the DMV has approved them via the HS-1 form, or through a licensed driving school.
When your student has completed the online course and all required driving hours, it’s time to take the road skills driving test at a Virginia DMV Customer Service Center. To qualify, the student must be at least 16 years and 3 months old.
To schedule and take the test, bring:
- Completed Form DL-1P
- The Home School Certificate of Enrollment, signed by the parent
- Your certificate of course completion
- Your driving log documenting completed hours
After passing the road skills test, the DMV will mail the driver’s license to the judge or court located in the student’s jurisdiction. The court will then notify the student and parent when a court date has been set.
At that court date, the student will appear and exchange their learner permit for their official, permanent Virginia driver’s license. Congratulations — you made it!
